[11050] Liberty Mutual Insurance Company -

I was given an estimate for auto insurance from Liberty Mutual that was lower than the competition. I accepted the estimate and signed on for the policy. A month later I received a letter stating that they occasionally review the policies they have written to see if rates might be adjusted. (It's presumed here that if you have an improvement in your driving record your altruistic insurance company might surprise you in lowering your rate.) Well, mine went up. They told me they had "discovered" an overdue inspection violation in another state. But when was obtaining the policy, they did like any other insurer and searched the databases for tickets and violations. Two speeding tickets from years ago were found, which I acknowledged, but I was told these would not affect my estimate. Another ticket, an overdue inspection sticker did not appear in the database, expectedly in that it carried no points in the state where it occured. Well, it "appeared" a month later in their follow-up review and for this reason I was going to have to pay more for my insurance. As the story went, the state in which I was now living levies 2 points for that inspection "violation." As far as I was concerned, it was their responsibility to give me an accurate estimate based on my record, which happens to include absolutely no accidents and very few violations in 40 years of driving. They had complete access to my records on the database system. It was not my problem they had a faulty system for reviewing their prospective policy holders' driving histories. Their responsibility is to give me an accurate estimate so I can judge the company against the competition. So I called them and complained, and they were adamant: you're going to pay the increase. A call to higher level managers, including their curious "presidential review board" simply ended up with my being referred to the original bulldog. As insult to injury, they told me if I cancelled the policy, there would be an early cancellation fee applied! After hearing enough of my complaining, being the good people they are, they told me they could drop the cancellation fee as a "concession." And that's Liberty Mutual, exploiting our nations Statue of Liberty symbolism in their logo, to steal from their customers.
