[12562] Coffin Insurance / Tris Coffin -

Coffin Insurance gave me a very low written quote on homeowners insurance, with a
$1000 deductible, since I'd specified that this is the most I was willing to pay
out of pocket.

After I bought the policy, they sent me a letter saying they
recommend a much higher limit for the dwelling insurance, meaning they want me to
buy a much more expensive policy, after they had undervalued the property in the first place.

In the paperwork (they didn't send me the policy itself?), I noticed that the
coverage showed 80% co-insurance. This means that with the policy they sold me,
if I'd filed a claim, I'd have to pay 20% of the cost myself.

A less detail oriented person may not have noticed or questioned this detail on
the paperwork. Why is this a big deal? Because if, for example, I'd filed a
$100,000 claim, I'd have to come up with $20,000 out of pocket. It is not uncommon
for people to pay on an insurance policy for a long time, then have their claim
denied due to a technicality.

When I called Tris Coffin, the owner, for clarification on what had happened and
to try to work out a solution, he was annoyed and didn't believe that I had not
been informed about the co-insurance... despite the fact that I had a written
quote for the policy I'd purchased, with no mention of the 80% co-insurance.

Tris Coffin did not seem to understand why the situation was a problem. All he
did was try to sell me a much more expensive policy. He also cut me off
mid-sentence, told me to get another agent and hung up on me! I had to drop
everything during an extremely busy period, and scramble to find another policy in order to have proof of insurance for a loan I was applying for.

In addition to the bait and switch, Coffin Insurance employees and owner were reluctant in
answering my questions about the policy, and repeatedly (over a period of a couple of weeks didn't honor promises to
get back to me with pertinent information.

I'd thought that saving a couple
of hundred dollars a year was worth putting up with this, but of course, the
recurring lesson is... if it's too good to be true, it's probably is.

Beware of Coffin Insurance's numerous problematic business practices.
