Sent to a friend[3734] SMART Tuition - Unethical Billing Practice
This company handles the billing/ processing of tuition payments for private schools. They are charging me a $20.00 for not paying a fee I was not invoiced for. I am being penalized for paying the amount I was billed for.The other fee (the one not on the statement) is a late fee assesed to my account, not because I paid late, but because their lazy processors failed to enter it on time.

- This seems to be standard operating procedure with "Smart" Tuition. Month after month, we pay on time; we are due to pay on the 20th of the month. However, despite the fact even their bills say our payment is due on the 20th, they rack up late fees for every month. This month they sent a letter on the 12th saying our payment is late. Obviously, simple math (20 comes AFTER 12) is too complex for the geniuses over at "Smart" Tuition.
Posted 3 years agoReport - I made a payment late. Do not disagree with this. However, 14 months later, Smart Tuition sends me a bill for $240. Said that late fees accrued on the unpaid balance. Not sure how I was supposed to pay a late fee that I knew nothing about. Our school discountinued working with them due to the # of complaints.
Posted 3 years agoReport - Smart Tuition says they need two business days to process payments. So to figure out your due date, pay two business days prior. No, it doesn't make any sense. They are a lousy company.
Posted 3 years agoReport - Smart tuition has employed these practices for several years. I've made payments so that they go away. I've just filed a complaint with the BBB and will file a complaint with the NJ Attorney General office.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Smart Tuition sends out invoices much later then they are dated and requires typically one week for payment to be received. A $30 per month late fee becomes almost unavoidable, and is how they are making there money. Avoid this comapny at all cost! Questionable billing ethics and poor integrity.

Posted 2 years agoReport - Smart Tuition uses unethical billing practices. They mail invoices late, do not inform customer of late fee’s being applied and take multiple days to process a payment and then call it late. The BBB lists 40 complaints in the last 36 months, most of them regarding billing.
Don't allow your school to use them.
Posted 2 years agoReport - It is clear to me that their business model relies upon charging unwarranted fees to their customers. In 4 billing cycles with them, they have charged me a $30 late fees 2 times, even though I had bank confirmation that they received both payments the day before they were due.
If they charge 1,000 people a $30 late fee and only 500 of those people complain, they still make $15,000 that month, right?
Have contacted my school, I'm sure they didn't know how unethical this company was.
Posted 1 year agoReport - I have experienced the EXACT same problems with Smart Tuition. Their billing practices are unethical and probably illegal. In 2 out of 2 months, it has taken them 10 to 15 days to process my payment. And, now I see that their statements say that late fees are assessed if payments are not "POSTED" on the due date, please allow 2 days for posting. So, the due date they provide is in reality NOT the due date. The real due date is whatever date pleases them to post your payment. In actuality, they only send you a bill 10 to 15 days prior to the phony "due date" so you'd have to mail your payment on the day the bill arrives for them not to clear a late fee.
I'm filing a complaint with the BBB and also the state's Attorney General. I encourage everyone having similar problems to contact your school administrator and also file complaints with the BBB and your Attorney General.
Posted 1 year agoReport - I am having the same problem with Smart Tuition. They are processing my payments late and charging me a late fee. My payments are sent via online Banking and 5 days before the bill is due. I will file a complaint with the BBB.

Posted 1 year agoReport - Smart Tuition charged me a late fee, stating that I hadn't paid by the due date, however, I confirmed that my check was cashed before the due date. I called them to explain their mistake. They would not acknowledge their mistake. They instead said that the payment must be Posted to their account by the due date, not just received by the due date, and that could take up to two days. With today's technology, their account would have been credited immediately. As a "courtesy", they waived the fee. I expect that many families rely on the due date stated on their invoice, not knowing that Smart Tuition may assess a late fee anyway, even if its received on time.
In my opinion, its a highly deceptive practice used to generate late fees.
