Caribbean South,
Puerto Viejo
The Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is truly a wonderful place to visit with its laidback environs, spicy piquant food, and unique Afro-Caribbean culture. The heart and soul of the Caribbean Coast, this region with its rich flavors has become a tourist favorite for those who are looking to relax and have some fun in the sun. Step into Puerto Limon, the capital of Limon Province and you will be transported into a completely different world.
Most of the people here are of Afro-Caribbean decent and were brought either from Jamaica or other Caribbean Islands to help work on the railroads or in the banana plantations that still support and make up much of this provinces exports. If you tour Southern Limon today, you will find numerous banana plantations as bananas are now a major cash crop out here.
Head into any of the towns along Costa Ricas Southern Caribbean Coast and you will find yourself in what can only be described as mini Jamaica with reggae and calypso music being played in the streets, delicious Costa Rican Creole cooking aromas, and a mix of a Spanish English dialect that is spoken here. Welcoming strangers with open arms, these towns are an experience in themselves.
Inaccessible till only a couple of decades back, this region has enjoyed a tourist boom in the recent years with the construction of the Gupiles Highway in 1987 connecting Limon to the capital city of San Jose. Visit the gorgeous Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge, home to amazing coastal rainforests and stunning underwater marine life and coral reefs. For the avid surfer, a trip to this region would incomplete without staying over at Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, with its amazing beaches and home of the famed Salsa Brava. The prefect place to kickback and have a good time this town is a great place to stay in.
For those who are looking for a quieter time, there are plenty of remote areas in the region, where one can stay literally in the middle of the jungle and still just a few minutes away from the coast. These all inclusive resorts are great as they offer a tranquil haven to relax as there are no other tourist facilities in the immediate area.
WHY PURCHASE REAL ESTATE IN COSTA RICA?
An investment in Costa Rica is much more certain than an investment in California real estate was 30 years ago, and that is the comparison being made with land in Costa Rica. Costa Rica property values are at a point very similar to what was in California before the land boom on the USA coast. Those who purchased land in California back then, have accumulated great wealth through their earlier land investing. All evidence points to Costa Rica being at a very similar time for excellent land value appreciation.
*Costa Rica land value appreciation has earned 20% yearly or more.
*Lifestyle and infrastructure are excellent and affordable, causing the major Intel Corporation (as well as many other world leading companies) to choose Costa Rica for a major world base, after they had looked all over the western hemisphere.
*Costa Rica's current prosperity boom is being fueled by the emigration of affluent baby boomers from around the world, seeking their own piece of a tropical paradise.
*English is the 2nd language, spoken fluently by over half of the population.
*Costa Rica is much like a little Hawaii, with world class ocean beaches (by law, no private beachfront ownership allowed, so all may enjoy any of the ocean beachfront) with tropical forests, range land to mountainous terrain, pristne streams and waterfalls, volcanic topography, farming communities to major upscale resorts.
*Climate on average of 82F, making no need for expensive heating nor cooling systems.
*Costa Rica has all the modern conveniences and technologies of the USA, though with a very real feeling of being a world away, though only a 2 hour flight out of Miami.
*First-Class education system, boasting of a 96% literacy rate. The safest of all Central America countries, with only a border patrol, no military, as uses all such funds to put into education and social programs. Is a United Nations declared neutral country (as Switzerland).
*Overall very HIGH quality of life with a very low crime rate.
*Excellent, affordable medical care with an average lifespan of 80 years.
*The only democracy in Central America, (200 years of democratic government) with very close ties to the United States.
*A reputation well earned for hospitiable and friendly culture. Costa Ricans enjoy treating others with class and dignity, and is a basis of their culture.
*MORE AMERICAN RESIDENTS PER CAPITA THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY OUTSIDE THE USA!
*SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LAND IN THE WORLD, affordable with very low taxes.
*Unlimited business opportunities with a government eager to attract foreign investors.
*Convenient location to the USA and Canada (2 hours from Miami), and chosen vacation and retirement spot by many Eureopeans, Canadians, and Americans.

Posted 4 years agoReport - eBay is full of land scams. I don't know why people believe in people like mysidething - Lets face it, if it is to good to be true - then it probably is!

Posted 3 years agoReport - I am Michael Leu, USA Land Invest.com, Inc. and below is my attorney noting this person making this slander about me, and why he is uptight now, as he has committed a felony, and is being indicted in CRica and New Jersey for fraud in taking land in CRica from me.
I am Michael´s Attorney in Costa Rica.
Yes, we are submitting criminal charges against Alfredo Alfaro, Nick Cocoozas partner here, because he used a limited power of attorney to transfer illegally Michael´s properties in Jaco to one of their corporations.
I traveled to USA at the end of November last year to try to get a amicable settlement, but they didn´t even answer my phone calls. Civil and criminal courts in Costa Rica will determine they are crooks in this matter.
Due to professional relationship with Michael my client, I can not disclose more details at this time, though the lawsuit and criminal charges will be recorded at the National Registry in the near future.

When a buyer is to build in CRica, a power of attorney is processed, allowing the buyer to get a survey, then a building permit... Alfredo Alfaro, and Nick Cocoozas (who listed this slander) used the power of attorney to steal more land than the acres they were allotted, and committed a felony both in CRica and the US...this CRica attorney has filed with a CRica federal prosecutor, where the above parties are now in the process of being indicted......Michael Leu flew the attorney to his home in Ohio, and this legal process is now in effect....the fraudulent buyer, in a panic attack knowing he will end up in prison, seems to have attempted an online statement to discredit Michael.
On Michael's auctions, are the links to view his legal ownership at the National Registry in CRica, being that federal govt. agency...stricter than the US, the federal govt. itself checks for clear ownership in Costa Rica, before will record....both criminal suits and civil suits are being filed by attorney Eloy Alfaro against the messenger of this slander. Thank you.
Posted 3 years agoReport - Mysidething on ebay doesn't even mention this post in his auction. Makes you wonder why? - Especially since the original post was posted here over 3 months ago! - You would think that if he was a legit person or business owner, he would notify others about this post????
Posted 3 years agoReport - Yeah, I started to bid on the costa rica land but found this website when I was searching, "MySideThing" on google and it was listed here too. Geee, makes you wonder...

What lawyer would state someones going to prison without a trial? Wow this letter is slanderous and crazy to boot.

Posted 3 years agoReport - freedom of speech does not apply to public false statements to harm another, being a violation of civil rights. why not post your contact info here so you can also discover these consequences? Though my attorney is already legally gaining all contact info so you may have the opportunity to face slander charges in your county court.

Posted 3 years agoReport - Who mysidething ? - You could probably get mysiething's contact information from ebay?
Posted 3 years agoReport - The freedom of speech and slander note refers to those posting here slandering mysidething. as all computer postings can be traced to the computer source, mysidething's attorney is legally gaining this info, and filing civil law suits against these who have slandered him on this site, as was done on the one posting the very first slander.
Posted 3 years agoReport - I am so thankful that people stand up and give us information which may be deemed helpful when making an informed decission about making a purchase on land.
Regardless whether someone is thinking of buying land or not, I would suggest that people view the land in person rather than purchase land on ebay from someone that you don't really know.
Several years ago, Land was offered for sale in backs of magazines... Lots of people were ripped out of alot of money. People seem to have forgotton about it, however, with ebay, there are new preditors on the loose. Who know's if mysidething is the real deal. Regardless whether he is or isn't.
One thing is quite clear. Make sure you see the property before purchase. Buyers beware. This is true for all things, including, pet rocks ;)
Posted 3 years agoReport - AMEN!
Would it be foolish to ask what was the end result in this drama, did it go to court, how was it resolved...id appreciate an honest response please minus the name calling and intimidation towards each other and other interested readers.
Posted 3 years agoReport - final result, mysidething's attorney filed a civil suit vs. the 1st one who slandered here, winning damages, and criminal charges are also filed, with the others slandering on this site facing a similar lawsuit. amen.
Posted 3 years agoReport - What court and who was sued? Was mysidething sued? - It appears that mysidething might have been sued as he has received a negative for selling land without having paid taxes...?
Posted 3 years agoReport - This is mysidething. see that feedback, was for a Texas lot where taxes were paid. my attorney sued and won per the slander on this site, and criminal charges were filed, and you can face the same as my attorney is watching these comments.
Posted 3 years agoReport - oh that's such a bunch of hooey lol sue me sue me lol.If anyone seriously believes this guy you need to have your head examined.
Posted 3 years agoReport - I kind of think it is funny that mysidething stated that no money was owed on taxes after someone left negative feedback for him for failing to pay taxes. If the the taxes were as he stated, paid, he wouldn't have gotten negative I bet. I wonder if he stated in his auction that taxes were paid? - If he did, then it would be deception and fraud on mysidethings part. Gee...
Posted 3 years agoReport - MYSIDETHING WAS SUSPENDED FROM EBAY. IT SAYS THAT HE IS NO LONGER A REGISTERED MEMBER.... PEOPLE SHOULD KEEP THEIR GUARD UP BECAUSE HE MAY USE ANOTHER EBAY NAME!
Posted 3 years agoReport - hello there what the heck is going on
Posted 3 years agoReport - Who knows....?
Posted 3 years agoReport - Michael Leu is selling under Ebay as "integrity in the deal", the lots are the same, but the numbers on them are different.
Posted 3 years agoReport - I bought 3 lots off of ebay from the person mentioned, and followed the process as he listed. All was done as he stated, and I sold one of those lots and made 5 times what I bought it for. I don't know what the problem is with those posting here, but was a good experience for me, and have talked with others who also had a good experience. You just need to follow the process as this seller listed upfront. His atttorney in Costa Rica has also talked with a number of buyers, including me, verifying all.
Posted 3 years agoReport - There are lots of ebay scams on ebay - everyone needs to be careful from the scams. Especially the ebay land scams.
Posted 3 years agoReport - Under the ebay name, integrityinthedeal ???
Posted 3 years agoReport - Hi, to the guy who just bought 3 lots and sold one, can you email me? mehamann@gmail.com? I have a lot and want to know the specific attorney you spoke to so he can help me as well. Thanks
Posted 3 years agoReport - Just saw these postings. I have to state for the record here that Mr. Leu has been a great blessing for my family. 5 years ago I bought land in Florida from him and that lot when I sold was for over 20 times what he sold it to me for. That literally put my son thru college, with me being a single mom. I also bought a Costa Rica lot from him just over a year ago and my sale was well beyond what I bought if for and will help now for my daughter's college tuition. I have to go on the record here to support Mr. Leu contrary to the other posting here. Blessings to all.
Posted 3 years agoReport - well, i bought some near worthless acreage from this guy in colorado (had the pretty pix and whatnot), over a 3 year period, and after the final payment was made, and all was well (according to mr. leu), i never saw a single piece of paperwork from him on this end. several emails produced nothing but promises. so i went to the courthouse in that county (about 700 miles from here) and they had never heard of him or me. in fact, when i went out to the property (from his legal description), i found a 'for sale' sign on it with a different guy's name on it (which i promptly kept - i still have it). it was only a few thousand bux, so i just laughed and came back home. what a total scam. karma will catch up with him, just like it has the wall street scammers. what goes around will come back to bite him in the ass. bigtime. he'll probably read this, remember who i am, and then stick his phony lawyer's post up. HA! bring it on dirtbag.
Posted 3 years agoReport - I am a land buyer from this seller. I have been to the consulate with the seller to complete a Costa Rica sale. The explained beforehand legal process was completed, and I had my land surveyed on the way to building. I also bought land from this seller previously in several different states, and all was also completed there as explained before hand. I list these unsolicited comments in support of this seller who has only acted with integrity and honesty to benefit my family.
Posted 3 years agoReport - integrityinthedeal now has closed down his feedback after receiving negatives on ebay account now who is he scamming under in ebay this week>?
Posted 3 years agoReport - I am a land buyer from that ebayer, and the negative is from his brother selling a cabinet for $120, that had a inch scratch on the back, as I was also concerned, and has been verified, as I contacted that buyer who left the negative earlier, and the cabinet sold to another bidder who loves it, and, as also now verified, the brother whose ebay site that is, upon receiving fees for that land owners sales and listings, used the fees for himself, and will be closed down until the brother pays those fees to ebay. I bought land over a 3 year period from this seller, and all has appreciated well over what I paid for it as realtors have verified. I have no cause to list this statement other than to support another who went out of his way to help me.
Posted 3 years agoReport - The land he is selling in Margarita, Limon province, is located on an indigenous kekoldi indian reservation. It is a scam. If you check the CR national registry, it says he owns it, however, his method of title transfer is not legaslly recognized by the CR govt. All the paperwork he provides is fake. He was under USAlandinvest.com before being booted from ebay. he was also reprimanded by the state of alaska for selling unregistered land.
Posted 2 years agoReport - I have bought land from this seller in Costa Rica, and met with the seller and a Costa Rica developer in April, 2009, at a Costa Consulate here in the US. The consulate had to check all, being a government official. The developer, a US citizen, has a Costa Rica partnership, and has 2 nice developments in other parts of the country, and is planning on the same with the land he bought from the seller being slandered here.
That above mentioned meeting has all the legal paperwork available with the consulate. Too bad those who have some problem with this seller seem to have a need to vent, but I can only state the facts as am now also part of this planned building there.
I also bought land from this same seller in Alaska, Colorado, and Arizona, and have the legally recorded deeds, and realtors there who support land value increases already.
I can only offer my experience as support of this seller, where all, including Costa Rica, is as was presented. Above person, if has also purchased from this seller land in Costa Rica from him, could follow all as I did, and the developer, to a nice investment.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Show us pictures! You cant, because there is no development. We have people on the ground in both locations, and there is no development. You cannot hide in Canada, either!
Posted 2 years agoReport - http://amcostaricas.com/082908.htm Read this article, and tell us; Are you are going to sue amcostarica.com for slander? You need mental help, Mr Leu!
Posted 2 years agoReport - http://www.dced.state.ak.us/bsc/orders.htm Here is where the State of Alaska issued a cease and decist order, for selling unregistered land, in Alaska. I guess you will have to sue them for slander, also?
Posted 2 years agoReport - This is the buyer from land from this seller, my earlier posts above. I bought 5 parcels in Alaska from him, and 3 Costa Rica lots, one in Colorado, and 2 in Florida. In Alaska, as I checked with the state and county there, Mr. Leu, in his 1st purchase there, was told by the state, after the fact of buying land from the state directly, had to wait 9 months, to resell. This is not the case in any other state direct land purchase. Once that was learned, you can look up his many, many then land purchases from the State of Alaska, both buying and selling, all bought directly from the AK govt. And yes, Mr. Leu sent me the Costa Rica consulate signed docs for the developer, who is planning a development there, and all can be checked with the consulate for that. I can only continue to support this seller, and am doing so, as my land purchases from him have paid off in nice profits for my family, and I will continue to support this seller.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Mr Leu himself writes these supportive comments pretending to be happy buyers. These people dont exist. Hope he is in prison for a long time..He also has an business associate that wrote one. How bored could you be.What a scam.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Ive sold your home in Mentor Ohio to several hundred kekoldi indians on ebay for 1,500 Colones (about $3.00 US) Dont be suprise when they come around, looking for their land. It all legal though, because I had a devloper fly in and an attorney from costarica fly in and we drank some beer and then made up some bogus titles to mail to the kekoldi indians. They have poison dart frog arrows, so dont piss them off!
Posted 2 years agoReport - http://realestate.escapeartist.com/listing_img.php?re_image_id=226592 Check out this link! The same map of margarita, but the numbering has gone from 1-120 to the 600s! WOW! that means these lots have been sold at least 4 times each! NOW THAT TAKES BALLS! View mr Leus listings for CRLANDINVEST.COM, USLANDINVEST.COM and MYSIDETHING.COM, and you can see the same map, with differnent numbering! DONT GET RIPPED OFF LIKE MY MOM DID!
Posted 2 years agoReport - http://www.caribesur-realestate.com/properties/margarita.asp Here is a link to view some of the bogus "titles" That Mr Leu gives his "customers". A quit claim deed is not a legal way to transfer property in Costa Rica. Real estate must also be legally subdivided, as well to ensure the landowners have the proper easements for utilities and roadways- none of this has been done- I tried numerous times to get a representative from Leus outfit to meet me on the ground- He never returned my calls or emails. Also notice the map of the Margarita lots- note how they start at 1 and got to around 120. The same maps has numbering in the 400's on other websites- a glaring example that some lots were sold more than once!
Posted 2 years agoReport - Again, as a former buyer from this seller, including Costa Rica, all for me was completed as advertised. I have a copy of the developer's paperwork that was signed in front of a Costa Rica consulate, and anyone can contact the consulate to verify. The developer bought a number of lots, over several of the plat maps.
The Costa Rica legal docs then come after following the power of attorney process, as he listed up front. For some here, seems easier to attack based on false claims rather than check what I have posted as a most satisfied customer.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Leu, you dont have the guts to take anyone to court, because you know you will lose. You dont even have the guts to go to costa rica and show the properties you claim to own, or at least secure a reputable realestate agent to show them for you- Why? Because it is a scam, and you know it. Its not the real estate agents that are on to you, its your previous customers. You cannot produce one photo of either property that has the roads and easments as your website(s) cliam- because they have never been legally subdivided. The land in Jaco is unsuitable for building- its nearly on a cliff, and the land in Margarita in on a Kekoldi indian reservation- Only the Kekoldi indigenous can legally live there. I would suggest buying some soap-on-a-rope while you are on ebay- because you are going to need it, where you are going.
Posted 2 years agoReport - Again, as a former buyer of this seller's Costa Rica land, the plat maps, as the seller listed on all sales, are in different parts of the whole land boundary, that whole land boundary survey map link below, produced by Stewart Title in Costa Rica, then each plat map being in a different part of this whole survey, being, different lots sold. Stewart Title title search was listed also on each sale, linked to below, and I continue to support the seller beyond the false claims made here.

Posted 2 years agoReport - The noted seller has been in front of a Costa Rica consulate, now a number of times, completing documents. Mr. Pinto must know that the consulate would not approve these documents if the seller did not have full, legal ownership, and these consulate documents are also now registered at the National Registry, by the consulate, a Costa Rica govt. official, making Mr. Pinto's ownership claims to be the fraudulent ones. Proof fully documented with the consulate at the National Registry.

Also on file at the National Registry is a Costa Rica developer who has plans in place to develop the land he bought thru this seller, with Mr. Pinto being served on the lawsuit mentioned.

Posted 2 years agoReport - Properties in Costa Rica are recorded in an electronic database operated by the Real Estate Property Registry, a section of the Costa Rica National Registry. The database provides public access and you can verify the information from any place in the world with an Internet connection.
The electronic report will show basic information regarding owner, location, cadastral survey number, boundaries and the area. In addition to that, the report will show if the property has easements, liens, annotations, mortgages and other encumbrances.
However, not all properties in Costa Rica are recorded in the Real Estate Property Registry. There are still some properties in Costa Rica, were the owners are not holder of a title. Instead, they have occupation rights and it is necessary to follow a procedure before a Courthouse in order to obtain an order from a Judge to record the property in the Costa Rica Real Estate Property Register.
Other exception is the Maritime Zone. Maritime Zone is defined as the seacoast area located two hundred meters from the high tide line. The Maritime Zone is divided in two sections: 1. Public area; and 2. Concession area. The Public area includes the first fifty meters from the high tide line. The Concession area is located between the fifty meters and the two hundred meters. The Municipalities manage concession areas and they can be granted in 20-year term leases (or concessions) to private parties, with several limitations.

Posted 2 years agoReport - Can foreigners own property in Costa Rica?
Yes, foreigners are permitted to own property outright in Costa Rica. Also, foreigners have the same property rights as Costa Ricans. Private property is protected by the Constitution of Costa Rica. It is no different than owning real estate in the US or Europe. Costa Rica is definitely a beautiful country to live, invest and retire.
I want to move to Costa Rica and am wondering if there are any restrictions on bringing pets into the country of Costa Rica?
If you want to bring your dog or cat, you will need to get in touch with the Consulate of Costa Rica in your country, bring a health certificate from a Veterinarian plus all vaccination given to your pet, or a certification of this by the doctor. Once you have all these papers, the Consulate of Costa Rica will seal all your documents; that will allow your pet to come into any country.
When coming to Costa Rica, do I need a passport or/and visa?
As a tourist, you do not need a visa if you are planning to visit less than 90 days. If you are already in Costa Rica and want to stay longer than 90 days, then you’ll have to leave the country for 72 hrs and re-entry legally again for another 90 days. You do not have to go too far. You may go to Panama or Nicaragua. You may also apply to the Directorate of Immigration in La Uruca for permission to stay longer in the country. Regarding the passport, you do need one to enter the country. It should be valid for at least 60 days after the arrival date. You should always carry it. A copy of the passport and stamps may not be enough as proof of legal status. It is a good idea to register with the Consular Section of the US Embassy to let them know how long you would be in the country.
I am to move to Costa Rica and will definitely take my pets along. What do I need to do?
Bringing your dog or cat is not a problem. The SENASA asks for the following requisites:
Import health requirements of Costa Rica for Dogs and Cats exported from The United States.
The dogs or cats must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, and endorsed by a Veterinary Services (VS) veterinarian. Additional information shale include:
Certification Statements
The dog/cat was examined and found to be healthy and free of any clinical sings of infectious disease. Note: In general this examination should be conduced within 2 weeks of the departure date.
Dogs were vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, Leptospirosis, parvovirus and rabies.
Cats were vaccinated against rabies.
Vaccination Requirements
See Certification Statement No. 2.
Animals over 4 months old must be vaccinated against rabies.
Other Information
It is recommended that a State or Federal (VS Form 18-1), U.S. Interstate and International Certificate for Small Animals be used.
The accompanying health certificate should be made out at teats in duplicate.
The health certificate does NOT need to be so Ned by a Notary Public, nor does it need to be stamped by the Costa Rican Consular office.
Animals exported in commercial lot numbers must be accompanied by an import permit. Personal pet dogs or cats do need an Import permit.
The rabies vaccination certificate should accompany the health documents.
How can I get a job or internship in Costa Rica?
Some Americans can get a job in Costa Rica. They may teach English in one of many private language schools in Costa Rica. The salary is not very attractive for US standards. If you have an elementary or secondary education certification you might get a job in a primary and secondary school as a teacher or office clerk also. You may also try at one of the English Language publications like The Tico Times, The Beach Times, For Sale by Owner, among others. You may get lucky and get a job at a beach hotel and be near the ocean (Wow!) Just remember that these jobs are not legal because only residents and citizens are allowed to work in Costa Rica.
You can also volunteer in Costa Rica. There are some U.S. non-profit programs such as “World Teach†that place volunteers in Costa Rica every now and then. The Costa Rican Embassy in Washington may help you on this topic. There are also volunteer opportunities with the Costa Rican Energy and Environment Ministry.
What documents do I need to get married in Costa Rica?
Costa Rican law permits U.S. citizens to get married here. A lawyer can perform the required legal ceremony. You will need the following documents:
A valid passport;
A certified copy of your birth certificate;
If you have been married before:
1. A certified copy of the divorce decree or
2. A certified copy of your previous spouse's death certificate;
If you have not been married before, you must come to the Embassy's Consular Section and make a sworn statement to that effect before a consular officer (there is a $30 fee for this service).
If you are marrying a Costa Rican citizen, he/she will need:
A Costa Rican ID (cédula de identidad)
A Certificate from the Civil Registry that he/she is single (certificado de solterÃÂa del Registro Civil).
In the United States, laws regarding marriage vary from state to state. Please contact the Province Clerk's office in the Province in which you plan to reside in or in which you are a resident with any questions regarding recognition of your Costa Rican marriage documents in the United States. (information provided by the US Embassy)
Do I require a specific vaccine to enter Costa Rica?
It depends of where you are from. The Yellow Fever Vaccination is required to people that live in certain countries in South America and Sub-Sahara Africa. People from Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, French Guiana and Venezuela are the ones that require this vaccine. They will have to present an International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever.
What are the restrictions for a foreigner to buy property in Costa Rica?
In Costa Rica, buying land is almost as “pick and payâ€Â, you pick a property and pay for it. You do not require a Costa Rican partner to buy land in Costa Rica. .
Why buying in Costa Rica rather than any other Central American Country?
Costa Rica is, by far, the best place to invest in Central America. Almost 60 years of democratic tradition, an nonexistent army, 97% literacy, and a prosperous, fast developing country makes buying and investing here fool proof. Costa Rica is a great place to retire or raise a family. A nature oriented country, Costa Rica offers beautiful national parks, amazing beaches, wonderful adventure sports, and relaxation. Here you will enjoy the advantages of living in the tropics with all the conveniences of a developed country.
When we move to Costa Rica how much will we have to pay in taxes on our household goods?
Age and condition of the imported items determine the import duties. Used computers, appliances and TVs usually pay around 15% of their declared value.
How can I know if a property is legally titled?
All properties are properly registered in the Public Registry. It does not matter if it is a concession or a regular property. If you want to find out if the seller possesses ownership of the property you may ask your attorney to check in the Public Registry, or you can check online. There you may also find out if there are any restrictions, encumbrances and liens.
Do I need to get a Costa Rican Driver’s license?
Your own driver’s license will work for you here in Costa Rica. Yet, it will be good just for 3 months. Then, you will need either to leave the country for 72 hrs. and return for another 3 months or get a Costa Rican Driver’s License. You may rent a car with your driver’s license and a credit card.
Are dollars accepted in Costa Rica or I have to change currency?
The official currency in Costa Rica is the Colon. Most prices will be in colones but you will find some stores (specially souvenir stores) that have all items marked in dollars. Credit cards and dollars are accepted almost everywhere but not in $50 or $100 bills. Smaller bills will always be accepted. All major credit cards are accepted (Visa, Master Card, AMEX)
For how long can I stay in Costa Rica without a visa?
Tourists from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, United States and all European countries except from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czech Republics, Iceland, Ireland, Lithuania, Malta, Russia Slovakia and Slovenia are allowed to stay for 90 days without a visa.
If you are from Australia, Belize, China, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, The Philippines and Venezuela you may stay for only 30 days without a visa.
All other countries require a visa to come to Costa Rica.
Am I going to be able to get my things through customs?
You are not supposed to pay for any personal luggage. That means that you can enter duty free all your belongings that are for personal and professional use. The only way you would have to pay for them is if you bring many items of the same kind and then the customs’ officer might think that you intend to commercialize them.
Your luggage will be inspected and you must fill out a customs declaration listing all the items that you bought abroad. This includes any alcoholic beverages, electrical appliances, any computer equipment, electronic stuff, and food or biological products. One declaration can be filled out per family.
When is it best to visit Costa Rica?
Well, Costa Rica can be visited anytime of the year. This really depends on individual taste and on the activities you want to do during your stay.
If you are looking for sun, sea, and summer and water activities Dry Season (High Season) may be your best option. From December thru April the weather is sunny and warm (hot at sea level) Beach resorts and water sport tour operators are very busy during this time of the year. Actually, this is the time of the year when most tourists come and visit because they are running away from the cold weather. This kind of weather can be found all over the country making it very pleasant to visit it all.
Inside the Dry Season we find what people at the tourist industry call the Peak Season (Christmas, New Year and Easter) These three weeks are the most expensive and busy of the year. Usually you will be able to rent only for the whole week and not for days or nights. These are the most difficult weeks to book, so, plan ahead if you want to come during those weeks.
But then, there is also the Green Season. This is what is usually called Rainy Season, but we changed the name to Green because it is the most luscious and exuberant part of the year. But with Green we took out the negative aspect of Rainy because it makes it seem like it never stops raining and that is not the case. As a matter of fact, this time of the year is very nice. It is usually sunny and glorious in the mornings and then after lunch it rains for a couple of hours. Some days it may rain for more than that or until next day, but those are the exception. Most of the time, you will be able to do plenty during the morning and also enjoy the weather. This season is very attractive for some people because prices go down making it more affordable to enjoy the country, the landscape is absolutely gorgeous and the temperature is not very hot but always warm. Rain forests are at their best and Turtles come to nest at some beaches during this time of the year.
What is recommended for me to bring along?
You may bring whatever you consider necessary. Every person has different needs and desires. Yet, there are some little things that may become handy:
Medication: if you are allergic to some insect bites or plants or food, pack your medicine FIRST! You may find most prescriptions in site, yet do not take any chances and bring your own.
Get ready to communicate: bring a pocket-size English/Spanish dictionary. This might be handy.
Get ready for adventure: do not forget to pack a pair of comfortable shoes for every occasion and place (sneakers, hiking boots, sandals, etc). Comfortable, loose clothes will allow you to climb. Sunscreen is a must! Even in a cloudy day you may burn. Always wear it!! Insect repellent, sunglasses & hat and a rain jacket may complete the outfit.
Get ready to live, enjoy and remember: if you bring your binoculars, camera and film if you need it, you will be ready to see and remember your trip. Living is enjoying, and living fully is enjoying at the most.
What is the time zone in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica does not observe daylight savings time. That is why some part of the year the time is the same as Central time in the US and the other part of the year, the time is the same as Easter time in the US.
